1989 Diploma (MSc equivalent) at the Zoological Institute I, University of Heidelberg, Germany, in the soil zoology group of Prof. Dr. G. Alberti.
1990-91 Research fellow of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
1992 Scientific employee, Zoological Institute I, University of Heidelberg, Germany.
1992 PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) at the Zoological Institute I, University of Heidelberg, in the soil zoology group of Prof. Dr. G. Alberti in collaboration with the Center of Molecular Biology Heidelberg (Prof. Dr. P.-M. Kloetzel).
1993-94 Head of a research group and guest lecturer, Institute for Zoology, University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim (Germany); in parallel group head at the Zoological Institute I, University of Heidelberg, Germany.
